SEVEN's Zero-Footprint Mobile Software Architecture Powers Cingular Wireless' New Cingular Xpress Mail Service

SEVEN Secures $30 Million in Series B Funding

Editorial Note: This press release was originally issued on September 11, shortly before the day's tragic events. Out of respect to those affected, we elected to halt all communications efforts and re-release the announcement at a later date.

Redwood City, Calif., October 2, 2001 - SEVEN today re-announced that Cingular Wireless is using SEVEN's mobile software architecture, System SEVEN, to launch Cingular Xpress Mail, a new corporate email service. Cingular Xpress Mail enables enterprise customers to have always-on, real-time mobile access to Email, Calendar, Contacts and Tasks by leveraging their existing messaging system, such as Microsoft Exchange, without having to purchase or install new software and hardware. The service will be available to select Cingular GPRS enterprise customers in Seattle this month, and will be available to all Cingular GPRS, GSM and TDMA enterprise customers later this fall. Cingular Xpress Mail represents the first GPRS business service offering in North America.

SEVEN also re-announced that the company has secured $30 million in Series B funding from leading venture capital firms SOFTBANK Asian Infrastructure Fund (SAIF), Bowman Capital, Ignition and Greylock. SOFTBANK Asian Infrastructure Fund (SAIF) and Bowman Capital join the returning Series A investors -- Ignition and Greylock -- and together they bring SEVEN extensive expertise in the mobile telecommunications, software and enterprise sectors. Gary Rieschel, executive managing director of SAIF, will join SEVEN's board of directors, and Bill Wiberg, general partner at Bowman Capital, will be an advisor to the board.

"Enterprises worldwide are driving the mobile data access market," said Bill Nguyen, founder and president of SEVEN. "According to a recent InfoWorld study, 75 percent of enterprises are currently using or plan to use wireless messaging and email. By choosing our mobile software architecture to build a corporate email service, mobile operators such as Cingular now have the ability to rapidly deploy mobile data access services that are cost effective and simple to manage for the enterprise and its users."

The System SEVEN architecture is comprised of integrated software modules that together enable mobile operators to offer enterprise customers a simple, cost-effective, voice-and-data-integrated service that provides real-time wireless access to enterprise data. With System SEVEN, the mobile operator enables its enterprise customers to extend their existing IT infrastructure into the mobile environment with zero-footprint behind the enterprise firewall -- no additional software or hardware is required.

Managing and provisioning a mobile data access service is simple for both operators and enterprises using System SEVEN. Enterprise IT administrators simply call their mobile operator sales representative and receive access to a delegated Web-based management system enabling them to quickly and easily provision their organization for secure mobile access to applications behind the firewall. The enterprise maintains complete management control of the applications, while offloading the cost and complexity of ongoing hardware, software and device management.

System SEVEN allows enterprises to extend their current infrastructure, eliminating any up-front investment and significantly lowering the total cost of ownership and deployment of a wireless strategy. SEVEN's internal ROI case studies show that a "roll your own" mobile data access strategy, which requires the installation and maintenance of new hardware and software, can cost an enterprise as much as 20 times more than a network-based service offered by a SEVEN-enabled mobile operator. Further, by using a network-based service, an enterprise gains unparalleled advantages such as complete management of the provisioning of devices and users, and access to network-only features including location and presence.

"When evaluating the deployment of mobile data access, enterprise decision makers have specific cost, security and implementation requirements," said Yankee Group Analyst Francesca Mabarak. "By leveraging existing enterprise infrastructure and the carrier network, SEVEN, through their mobile operator partners, provides a compelling approach for equipping businesses with the tools necessary to capitalize on and increase mobile productivity without having to install or maintain costly new software and hardware."

Earlier this summer, BT Cellnet announced that it is using System SEVEN to offer Connected, a comprehensive mobile suite of applications and services including unified messaging for enterprise customers in the UK.

"SEVEN's carrier-grade mobile software architecture has a compelling value proposition for operators, enterprises and business users alike," said Gary Rieschel, SAIF's executive managing director. "Just six months after the company launch, SEVEN is a profitable company with global customers, solid technology and a world-class team. We are looking forward to working with SEVEN to identify future market opportunities and to bring simple, easy and affordable data access services to businesses worldwide."
