Sprint Announces Plans to Expand its Wireless Corporate
Email Offering with a Network-Based Solution for Enterprise
Customers
Sprint PCS Business Connection Enterprise
Edition Provides Enterprise Customers Secure Mobile Access
to E-mail and PIM via Sprint's Nationwide PCS
Network
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - (April 29, 2002) -
Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS), which operates the largest
all-digital, all-PCS nationwide network in the United
States, announced plans to expand its wireless corporate
email portfolio by developing Sprint PCS Business
Connection Enterprise Edition, a service providing
enterprise customers wireless access to corporate e-mail
via their Sprint PCS Phones or handheld computers. The new
network-based solution is designed to help enterprise
customers increase productivity by providing employees
secure, real-time mobile access to e-mail and PIM
information, including calendar, contacts and tasks. The
service, which is part of the Sprint PCS Clear Wireless
Workplace, is expected to be available mid-2002. The plans
were announced in conjunction with the first-ever Sprint
PCS User Conference for corporate decision makers being
held in Las Vegas on April 28 to May 1, 2002.
Sprint PCS Business Connection Enterprise Edition is
designed to offer a secure, network-based service that can
be easily deployed across the enterprise and managed by the
enterprise IT department. As a network-based solution,
there is no costly middleware or hardware for customers to
install behind the firewall, and employees are not required
to install software onto their desktops. Enterprises can
self-provision the service within minutes, add new users,
track usage, and manage the service using a web-based
administrative interface. The service will be hosted in a
Sprint carrier grade E|Solutions Center, ensuring secure
handling of corporate data, with availability and
reliability backed by comprehensive service level
agreements. Sprint plans to bundle several security options
with the product including SSL (secure socket layer), VPN
(virtual private network) and frame relay to provide a
complete end-to-end Sprint solution for enterprise
customers.
"Whether you're an individual business customer
looking for wireless access to corporate e-mail or an
enterprise looking to deploy company-wide wireless data
access, Sprint can address those needs," said Jay
Highley, vice president, business marketing, Sprint's
wireless division. "Sprint PCS Business Connection
Enterprise Edition and Personal Edition both offer secure,
cost-effective and easy-to-install solutions that keep
business customers connected to their corporate
information, helping them to increase productivity, reduce
costs and gain a competitive advantage. Our Business
Connection offering is another market leading, end-to-end
wireless business solution of the Sprint PCS Clear Wireless
Workplace designed to increase productivity, reduce costs
and create a competitive advantage."
The new corporate wireless solution follows the launch of
Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition earlier
this year. Personal Edition provides individual subscribers
with secure mobile access to their corporate email by
downloading software directly onto their PC. Compatible
with both Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes, the software
is designed to allow individual customers to quickly and
easily register for real-time mobile access to their
corporate applications from a Sprint PCS Phone or other
wirelessly enabled device connected to Sprint's
nationwide PCS network. Personal Edition software can be
downloaded at

The core components of Sprint PCS Business Connection
Enterprise Edition were developed by SEVEN, a global
wireless software company based in Redwood City, Calif.
"Sprint PCS Business Connection Enterprise Edition is
ideal for enterprises looking for a secure, affordable,
easily managed mobile data access service," said Bill
Nguyen, founder and CTO of SEVEN. "Because Sprint PCS
Business Connection Enterprise Edition is zero-footprint -
no additional hardware or software installation required -
enterprises save time and resources, while quickly
capitalizing on their ROI."
Sprint PCS Business Connection Enterprise Edition is
compatible with Sprint's Third Generation Network so
enterprise customers will not be required to purchase new
software once Sprint's 3G services launch nationwide in
mid-2002. New 3G mobile devices will be needed to take
advantage of the enhanced speeds of 3G.
In addition to the Business Connection line of products,
Sprint also offers a customer premise-based service to
enable wireless access to Microsoft Exchange- and Lotus
Domino-based systems behind the corporate firewall with
Wireless Knowledge Workstyle. The companies began offering
the secure enterprise solution in September 2000 with the
launch of the Sprint PCS Wireless Web for Business.
The Sprint PCS User Conference is the first ever user
conference for senior level executives charged with
developing effective wireless enterprise strategies. The
sold out conference offers a comprehensive agenda featuring
noted industry experts and analysts, with opportunities to
learn more about Sprint's migration to 3G services, the
current wireless landscape, the latest voice and data
solutions for business, and how to maximize return on
wireless investment.
