Sprint Unveils Plans to Bring Wireless Corporate Email to the Masses with Simple, Easy-to-Install, Desktop Solutions

Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition Enabled by SEVEN will Allow Customers to Access Corporate Email, Calendar and Contacts Real-Time Anywhere on Sprint's Nationwide PCS Network

Las Vegas, Nevada, January 8, 2002 - Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) plans to make it easier and more cost effective for customers to gain access to their corporate e-mail via their Sprint PCS Phones or handheld computers with Sprint PCS Business Connection(SM) Personal Edition. The new solution is designed to boost personal productivity by giving mobile professionals the ability to access mission critical information when they are away from their desks. The service will be available through Sprint's wireless business sales channels, Sprint Stores and online at www.sprintpcs.com later this quarter. Sprint, which operates the largest all-digital, all-CDMA nationwide network in the United States, made the announcement today during the 2002 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition is a corporate email solution designed to make it easier for customers who want access to their corporate email, calendar, personal contacts and corporate contacts while mobile. Customers will be able to download and install the desktop software for the new e-mail service via a CD or web site. Compatible with both Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes, the software is designed to allow customers to quickly and easily register for real-time mobile access to their enterprise applications. Once registered, customers will gain mobile access to their corporate applications from a Sprint PCS Phone or other wirelessly enabled device connected to the Sprint's nationwide PCS network. The software is also designed to give customers the ability to access and send files stored on their computer hard drive with no synchronization required.

"Sprint clearly understands the diverse needs of our business customers, and access to corporate e-mail is at the top of their list. Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition is a simple, easy-to-install solution that provides a window into your corporate e-mail and files on a Sprint PCS Phone or wirelessly connected handheld device anywhere on our nationwide network," said Jay Highley, vice president, business marketing, Sprint's wireless division. "The appeal and accessibility of this service extends beyond the hard core road warrior. Anyone that wants access to their Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes applications on their Sprint PCS Phone will be able to take advantage of it. This latest announcement is another example of how Sprint continues to be a leader in providing relevant, end-to-end wireless business solutions as part of the Clear Wireless Workplace."

The core components of Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition were developed by SEVEN, a global wireless software company based in Redwood City, Calif.

"By choosing SEVEN's mobile software architecture to build a corporate e-mail service, Sprint gives business people a quick and painless way to access corporate data while away from the office without costly hardware and software installations," said Bill Nguyen, president, SEVEN. "Customers will immediately be able to see the benefits from Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition because it allows access to information where it is most effective in the business process. By turning downtime into productive time?when stuck in a cab or waiting for a meeting to start?or by enabling users to access key data at the point of sale to close a deal, Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition will become a competitive advantage for the most successful business people."

Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition has several features that are expected to differentiate it from other available solutions:
  • Easy to Set Up - Customers will be able to use the services within minutes of registering without dealing with complex synchronization and software installation.
  • Access to E-mail and Corporate Files - Corporate or personal information can be accessed on a Sprint wirelessly enabled device, or on a computer with Internet access to the Sprint PCS web site. For example, in addition to using their Sprint PCS Phone, a sales representative could use a computer at a client's office, airport or Internet cafe to access their e-mail and files stored on the corporate network. This includes contacts for both global and personal directories.
  • Connection Sharing - The customer's desktop computer does not need to be turned on and connected to the network for the solution to work. A shared connection can be set up with co-workers that are connected to the same network domain using proxy settings and configuration.
  • Security - The customer's corporate e-mail is not stored outside of their corporate network. Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition allows access to enterprise applications behind most corporate firewalls. Changes made on the mobile device are instantly updated on the user's mailbox, requiring no subscriber synchronization.
  • 3G-Ready - Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition is compatible with Sprint's Third Generation Network and does not require any software upgrades once Sprint's 3G services launch nationwide.
SEVEN's software architecture resides directly on the Sprint network, enabling customers to benefit from a simple service delivery model and helping businesses avoid large-scale installations of new infrastructure. The business customer simply downloads and installs the Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition software on their desktop and in a matter of minutes they are ready to use their mobile device as a data access tool. Consequently, corporate IT departments should not have to spend additional time and money to integrate the solution or deploy other resources to install and maintain new hardware and software on their corporate network.

With Sprint's Third Generation Network scheduled to launch nationwide in mid-2002, Sprint is gearing up for an expected surge in wireless data usage as peak network speeds increase to 144 Kbps and mobile devices become more powerful.

"Our research and surveys of business users consistently show that access to corporate email is the single most important application for users of wireless Internet services," said Ken Hyers, senior analyst, Cahners InStat. "Sprint PCS Business Connection Personal Edition removes many of the barriers that have limited access to corporate e-mail in the wireless environment. Barriers overcome by this product include ease of installation and setup, real time access to e-mail, and a secure solution, which prevents unauthorized access to corporate data. I believe that Sprint PCS Business Connection will successfully meet corporate America's need to remain connected while on the go."

Sprint's Highley added: "The bottom line is that business customers want simple, affordable mobility solutions that increase their productivity, reduce costs, enhance customer service and provide a powerful competitive advantage. Sprint is in a superior position to deliver on those objectives, particularly with the nationwide launch of the Sprint Third Generation Network just around the corner."
