Industry Veteran Joins as CEO; $42M in Expansion Capital
Redwood City, CA (December 14, 2006) - SEVEN, the global leader in white-label mobile email, today announced that Ross Bott will join the company as its new chief executive officer effective January 1, 2007. He will be teaming with Kent Thexton, SEVEN's current chief executive officer, who will assume the title of executive chairman and remain actively involved with the company's business and customers. This expansion of SEVEN's executive team is timed with a more than doubling of its subscriber base in 2006 and substantial acceleration heading to 2007.
Ross Bott, a 28-year technology industry veteran, has been an active member of SEVEN's board since 2002 and has served as director and advisor with other mobile technology companies in the U.S. and Europe. Previously, Bott was CEO of Onebox.com, a mobile messaging startup, also founded by SEVEN founder and ongoing board member Bill Nguyen, which grew to three million subscribers before being acquired by Phone.com (now Openwave) in 2001. Bott remained at Phone.com as COO after the acquisition. Formerly, he was EVP of all products at Adobe Systems, and held general management positions at Silicon Graphics and Pyramid Technology. Bott holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence/Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego.
"SEVEN is in position to lead the mobile email market and in 2007 we are pushing the boundaries to get there. SEVEN-powered mobile email is now available to both consumers and enterprises on nearly every new mobile phone in the market from more than 100 mobile operators in markets around the globe. We are in unique position to seize the opportunity," said Thexton.
SEVEN today also announced that it has raised an additional $42M in capital to accelerate its growth worldwide. In 2006, SEVEN grew its customer base from 76 to 108 mobile operators in more than 60 countries. In 2007, SEVEN will continue to focus on winning new customers, but, more importantly, expects to invest aggressively in ensuring that its customers are successful in reaching their mobile email subscriber targets. New capital market investors joined SEVEN's current investors in an oversubscribed financing round.
SEVEN is considered by many financial and industry analysts to be the largest white-label provider of mobile email and the second largest mobile email supplier in general. For example, in a report dated October 13, 2006, UBS cites SEVEN as having the second largest market share of the mobile email market after Research in Motion with more market share than Intellisync (Nokia), Good Technology Inc. and Visto Corporation combined.
"Kent and the team have set up a strong fundamental operating environment that is poised for continued strong market growth and financial success," said Bott, "By growing the management team and bolstering the balance sheet - we've put the elements in place to achieve that success. It is an exciting time for SEVEN and I am honored to have been asked to expand my role with the company."
