SEVEN Networks Debuts Device-Based Mobile Analytics Software for Heterogeneous Networks

New Open Channel Edge Mobile Analytics Software Delivers Timely and Actionable Intelligence for Wireless Carriers

SAN CARLOS, California – February 19, 2014 - SEVEN® Networks, a provider of innovative software products for mobile traffic management and optimization, today launched Open Channel® Edge Mobile Analytics, a software platform that provides device-centric mobile analytics on heterogeneous networks. The platform provides near real-time, historical and predictive per-user views of application, network, device and quality of experience (QoE) metrics.

Edge Mobile Analytics enhances operators’ ability to understand what is happening on subscriber devices at the application, system and network levels, automatically correlating data to identify causal links between variables. For example, carriers gain intelligence on the effect of application and network behavior on device battery life, LTE rollout and Wi-Fi offload effects, network efficiency and connection failures by device and location, subscriber quality of experience by location and time of day and more.

Unlike analytics solutions that are solely network based, Edge Mobile Analytics captures metrics directly from the user’s device – the most important edge of the network. Operators get deeper, highly actionable intelligence with maximum visibility into the moment-to-moment subscriber experience.

Also unlike competing solutions, Open Channel Edge Analytics integrates with other Open Channel products for traffic optimization, policy management and Wi-Fi offloading. By using the products in combination, network operators dramatically increase their ability to take action on mobile intelligence learned through Edge Mobile Analytics. The platform also provides a perfect complement to traditional deep-packet inspection (DPI) or network-based analytics solutions with device-centric visibility of many variables.

Open Channel Edge QoE Analytics is the first of several planned products to be released from the Open Channel Edge product line. Edge QoE Analytics provides deep, near real-time insight into heterogeneous network performance and subscriber quality of experience (QoE). Among many composite performance metrics, the solution employs a SEVEN proprietary measurement of end-user QoE based upon a broad range of variables, including latency, packet loss, jitter and usable bandwidth. These metrics are coupled with contextual information about the device, location, signal strength and current network, meaning that Edge QoE Analytics focuses on a broader set of inputs than traditional QoE solutions. This allows the platform to very precisely represent the actual subscriber experience at the device level.

Examples of the over 50 reports provided through Edge QoE Analytics include:

  • QoEGrade – by time, location and network (Wi-Fi/cellular 3G, 3.5G and LTE)
  • Signal strength – by time, location and network (Wi-Fi/cellular 3G, 3.5G and LTE)
  • Congestion prediction – by time, location and network (Wi-Fi/cellular 3G, 3.5G and LTE)
  • Jitter, DNS resolution time and packet loss – by time, location and network (Wi-Fi/cellular 3G, 3.5G and LTE)
  • Throughput – by time, location and network (Wi-Fi/cellular 3G, 3.5G and LTE)

Built for Data Privacy & Security

Open Channel Edge Mobile Analytics has been engineered from the ground up to ensure data privacy and subscriber anonymity. The data collected is strictly limited to application, network and device telemetry and all data transfer to the processing tier uses a secure HTTPS connection. Unique device identifiers are encrypted using industry standard mechanisms. Operators have full and flexible control over what data is captured, how often and from which handset groups.

The Open Channel Edge Mobile Analytics client component may be deployed as an OEM-embedded or over-the-top smartphone application, depending upon carrier preference.

“The device is the new edge of the network, and a software presence on the client is critical to providing the data that carriers require,” said Ross Bott, President and CEO of SEVEN Networks. “The device-centric approach that we have taken with Open Channel Edge Mobile Analytics offers better mobile intelligence to help carriers improve both the subscriber experience and network efficiency.”

Edge Mobile Analytics is part of the SEVEN Networks Open Channel software product family, which helps carriers analyze, manage and optimize mobile data traffic. The product line includes software for traffic optimization, policy management and Wi-Fi offloading. Open Channel Edge QoE Analytics is available for mobile operator field trials.

About SEVEN Networks

SEVEN® Networks software solutions deliver device-centric mobile traffic management and analytics for wireless carriers. Extending control to the mobile client gives operators the power to manage and optimize data traffic before it impacts the network. Device-based analytics offer more complete and timely insight than solutions that are solely network-based. SEVEN’s Open Channel® products reduce operator costs, increase network efficiency and enhance the end-user experience. They bring immediate capacity relief to overloaded networks, simplify the creation of innovative new service plans and provide actionable intelligence for mobile carriers.
